Our 23 Quality Criteria

Browsing the Web & Publishing
Web Sites

The two main browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape. These are both stable but very large programmes. You may want to consider smaller footprint (smaller file/program size) products such as

Opera (1.3Mb)    or   iCab (Mac 989k)

Once you have a browser on your computer you can view any web site or document built using HTML (or XML) tools. To create your own web site or HTML documents varies from extremely easy, for simple web pages through to very difficult for complex, database driven, interactive web sites. Many recent editions of "Office" tools have a "save as" function that saves any document that you produce as an HTML document. Other HTML editors (the software for producing web pages), are outlined below.

1. "push the button" editors

2. Dedicated WYSIWYG editors

3. Real Editors (you have to know how to code in HTML)

Hosting Your Site

You can host a simple site on a variety of servers for free. These often add advertisements to your site and you end up with a URL of:
http://www.wehostyoursiteforfree.com/elementry/schools/stpatricks/
rather than http://www.stpatircks.school.nz.

Virtual Avenue Web Site Hosting
Hypermart Free Web Site Hosting
Homestead: Building a Home Page
Geocities Web Site building & Hosting

You can also host your site with your ISP (Internet Service Provider), who will usually give you a good deal in terms of price. If you have a serious, database driven site with lots of extensions, java etc. then you may require a professional web hosting company, of which there are thousands. Remember that the hosting company does not have to be in your country.

Obtaining Your Own Domain Name

The length of your URL for your school can be reduced by having your own domain name. You can apply for this from either your Local Education Authority, Education Department or do it yourself by using the Accredited Registrar Directory. The cost for this varies, but is about $US30-50/year.

To view school pages online and get some design and presentation ideas you can visit WEB 66.
